Meanwhile, keeping your dose of niacin to less than 500 mg, avoiding hot showers immediately after taking niacin, or taking aspirin or ibuprofen before supplementation might also help prevent niacin flush ( 15, 16).Īlternatively, you can purchase niacin-free products by checking the ingredients on the label. Alternatively, you can buy sustained-release formulas that prevent this side effect ( 9). The most effective method to reduce the tingling associated with beta alanine is to divide the lower daily dose into separate doses of around 1.6 g each. While niacin also plays an important role in energy metabolism, supplementing with it likely doesn’t offer additional benefits if you consume a well-balanced diet ( 13).įurthermore, one 2021 study even found that taking 1,000 mg of niacin before an aerobic workoiut actually impaired exercise performance ( 14). In high doses of 500 mg or more, it can trigger a blood rush to the surface of your skin, resulting in red patches ( 12). While it’s a harmless nervous system reaction, some people may find it uncomfortable ( 11).Īnother ingredient with mild downsides is niacin, which is included in many pre-workout supplements for its skin-flushing effects. Yet, this ingredient may cause paresthesia, a tingling sensation in your hands and feet. Two additional ingredients in many pre-workout supplements are beta alanine and niacin (vitamin B3).īeta alanine is an amino acid that reduces acidity in your muscles during exercise, which may help you sustain your workout for slightly longer.ĭosed at 4–6 g per day, it has been shown to increase exercise performance and reduce fatigue in high intensity exercises lasting 1–4 minutes ( 9, 10). The easiest way to avoid mild side effects from creatine is to take smaller daily doses instead of doing a loading phase. This is mainly due to increased water retention in your muscles ( 7). Notably, it may be difficult to avoid moderate weight gain while taking creatine. However, this option would increase muscle creatine content more gradually, meaning it will take longer to experience benefits for exercise performance ( 7). This method provides rapid benefits - but has a higher potential to cause some anecdotal side effects, like digestive issues and bloating ( 7).Īlternatively, you can take a single daily dose of 3 g for 28 days. However, higher doses may be recommended in some cases ( 7). You can reduce any adverse symptoms by ensuring proper dosing.Ĭreatine is typically dosed with a loading phase of 5 g, four times per day for 5–7 days, followed by a 3–5-g daily maintenance dose. Ways to reduce side effectsĭespite these side effects, creatine has been shown to be exceptionally safe ( 7, 8). While there are anecdotal reports of other side effects - including digestive issues, dehydration, and muscle cramps - these have not been observed in clinical studies ( 7). The most common side effect associated with creatine is weight gain, which may be due to water retention. While it’s most often part of a pre-workout supplement, creatine can also be taken on its own. It has been shown to increase high intensity exercise capacity and lean body mass gains from exercise ( 7). If you experience side effects, try a smaller dose to see how your body reacts.Īnother popular ingredient in many pre-workout formulas is creatine. You’ll find caffeine in most pre-workout supplements, but this stimulant can cause jitteriness, anxiety, and an increased heart rate. Of course, you can also choose pre-workout supplements without any caffeine. Remember that it’s best to avoid caffeine for at least 6 hours before bed to help prevent sleeplessness, according to some older research ( 6). The best way to reduce side effects is to start with a small dose of a caffeinated pre-workout supplement, slowly increasing your dosage to see what you can tolerate. Ways to reduce side effectsĬaffeine dosing is very individualized, as some people tolerate it better than others. In comparison, 1 cup, or 240 milliliters (mL), of coffee contains only 95 mg ( 5). Serving sizes typically range from 0.35–1 ounce (oz), or 10–30 grams (g). What’s more, many pre-workout supplements pack high amounts - up to 500 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per serving. These include insomnia, nausea, increased heart rate, headaches, anxiety, and jitteriness or restlessness ( 4). Nonetheless, caffeine has several potential side effects, especially if you consume too much. In theory, caffeine allows you to get more out of a given workout. This stimulant has been shown to increase muscle strength and output during exercise while reducing fatigue ( 1, 2, 3). Caffeine is one of the primary ingredients in many pre-workout supplements.

Vitality, which increases health and energy, and plague which levels your claw damage.Īfter leveling up, you then receive talent points which can then be used to unlock various upgrades for your skills in the following categories: Saber, Deflect, Dodge, Claw, and Strategies. Once you have enough shards, you can choose between three main stats to level: Strength, which increases damage. Talent points are given via leveling, which is done via “Memory Shards” that are obtained from killing enemies. It’s not until later in the game that deflections will truly become useful, and this is thanks to the small talent tree in place. It also doesn’t even interrupt combos, which I initially wasn’t a fan of. Damage is done via deflecting the attack itself, instead of with a riposte system which is good…but the timing on this one is also way too precise to be useful. As for the deflection mechanic, it is geared for close-range parrying of normal attacks. You have a limited number of feathers to throw, and the timing for this is pretty much “you miss by microseconds and you lose” which is just not that fun. Feather attacks allows Corvus to cancel specific attacks from a distance, but only works on specific attacks denoted by a green flash before the enemy attack. There are also the feather attacks and deflection mechanics, which basically serve as the game’s parry mechanics. You can also “extract” plague weapons using a charged claw attack, which gives you a one time use of whatever weapon that enemy is currently using, which is a nice way to test out each weapon without having to grind for stones. These weapons are gained from the various enemies in the game once killed, they have a chance of dropping a “stone” that is used to unlock and upgrade these weapons, which can then be activated as a special attack using your Energy bar. Then you have Plague weapons, which are one of the neater additions to the game. On the smaller enemies this isn’t too bad, given how little damage they take to kill, but with bosses and “black-knight”-esque mobs later on this tactic becomes more tedious than anything, lengthening encounters that would otherwise take no time at all. It’s an interesting idea in theory, but terrible in practice, and seems it was mostly put into place to force you to play the game a specific way as opposed to the freedom you get with Soulsborne games. And how do you deal that damage? Via claw attacks, of course!.which are, for the most part, mostly useless for doing HP damage, so you’ll have to combo the two attack styles to defeat foes. The Wound acts more like an enemy's main HP as opposed to the white bar, as if you don’t do enough wound damage to the enemy it will regenerate its health back to whatever level the green bar is at. This damages enemies and lowers their health.īut it’s not quite as simple as that, however, as enemy health bars have two sets of health: the white “HP” bar and a green “Wound” bar. Normal attacks are self explanatory, attacking enemies with your saber and dagger (which is the only “main” weapon available to you). Instead of the usual light and heavy attacks, you’ve got five main ways to damage your opponents: normal attacks, “claw” attacks, feather attacks, plague weapon attacks, and deflects. Unlike most Soulsborne clones, thankfully, Thymesia at least tries to do some things differently here which I much appreciate. As you make your way through the village you’ll get your first taste of gameplay for Thymesia. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) The game starts off in the middle of a village ruined and destroyed due to the terrible plague sweeping the nation. Thymesia follows the story of Corvus, a plague doctor-esque figure whose main goal is to cure the kingdom of Hermes of a terrible curse caused by alchemy and…vile blood. In exchange, the water sign can teach the glib air sign to dive into their depths more, rather than being overly superficial or turning everything into a joke. The water sign will learn how to take things less personally, laugh at themselves and lighten up. Since water signs can be TOO “in their feelings,” the cooler, rational air sign partner can teach them the power of detaching. The benefits of this match is an opportunity for growth. The air sign will have to embrace tradition and develop more emotional sensitivity. The water sign partner will have to be more open to new people and experiences, going with the flow. The water sign might be jealous or threatened by all of these newcomers, while the air sign feels suffocated and bored by seeing the same old faces. By contrast, air signs never met a stranger and are constantly introducing you to their latest BFFs. Living in the South, almost every White person has a small amount of racial awareness, simply because of the number of negroes in this part of the country. I was not raised in a racist home or enviroment. I was born on the third day of April, 1994 in Columbia, South Carolina. After the shooting, investigators find a handwritten journal in Roof’s car that details his motivations. In Miami’s game with the Detroit Pistons, some members of the team play in sneakers with the messages RIP TRAYVON MARTIN and WE WANT JUSTICE on them.ĭylann Roof murders nine Black people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. I’d never felt that high of representation mirroring me. It was satisfying, the spite of it all: this Black man, on this stage, with his Black family, knowing there were witnesses who doubted his legitimacy or, worse, would rather see him dead than occupy the White House. It was what one might imagine a fantastical, spectacular culmination of thousands of years of struggle to feel like. “I can’t believe it,” she whispered, as if not to awaken some alternate reality. Coming out of her bedroom, slow and curious like a shadow, my mother stood beside me, mouth agape at the television screen. The morning after, still groggy, I wondered if I drifted during coverage and dreamt it. I was 17 when President-elect Obama walked across the stage in Grant Park with his Black, beautiful, accomplished wife and their two young Black daughters to give his acceptance speech. This draws intense criticism, and Rivera later apologizes. President Obama speaks on Trayvon’s killing for the first time, saying, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.” Geraldo Rivera says on Fox & Friends that Trayvon’s hoodie was as much responsible for his death as Zimmerman. Suddenly, the counterculture found itself with a new street-style standard that could be idiosyncratic by way of color, size, patches, shredding, band logos, safety pins, skulls and crossbones, bleaching, or whatever you wanted to add to say “Fuck you!” and punk-rockers in NYC adopted it, the sweatshirt with a hood became a symbol of disruption. A staple of hip-hop culture, the hoodie represented defiance, the down low, discretion, and dignity. Then, in 1973, the beat dropped in the Bronx, and the hoodie became the uniform of MCs, stickup kids, graffiti artists, and b-boys. It soon became popular with athletes and laborers in the Northeast because the added fabric served as a form of protection against the elements and later with high-school athletes, who would wear their schools’ logos and crests on their chests. It was born in the 1930s at Champion when the clothing company that made sweatshirts attached a hood. It has served as a vehicle for both this country’s dreams (athleticism, higher education, luxury) and denials (counterculture, anti-Establishment, racial injustice). The history of the hoodie aligns with America’s divisions of class, race, and identity. Lindsay Peoples-Wagner and Morgan Jerkins This special issue attempts to tell the story of the first decade of Black Lives Matter, the movement - as well as the country it moved. It is, at the same time, a specific collection of organizations and people whose decisions have attracted both applause and criticism whose actions have been a source of intrigue whose personal relationships have both strengthened and splintered under the stress and exposure. Ten years later, “Black Lives Matter” has grown from a hashtag to a protester’s cry to a cultural force that has reshaped American politics, society, and daily life. On February 26, 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, because as a Black boy walking in a gated community, he was deemed “suspicious.” Zimmerman’s acquittal appalled a nation often willfully blind to the vulnerability of living while Black. Students are placed in skill-appropriate lessons and given individualized goals and remediation based upon initial pretests and formative testing as they progress through the program. Technique and ergonomics are addressed from the beginning and reinforced throughout the curriculum. It is designed to guide the student and support the classroom teacher through the keyboarding skill development process. Sunburst Digital’s Type to Learn software provides a research-based interactive learning environment for K-12 keyboarding learners. Efficiency is expanded if keyboarders type short letter clusters and words as single units instead of groups of individual letters (e.g., er, ing, the, my). Learning key location requires a sequential introduction of the keys along with a great deal of repetition and reinforcement to develop the kinesthetic memory traces leading to keyboarding automatically. Mastering keyboarding involves learning technique (physical positioning and movement), ergonomics (safe and comfortable keyboard interaction), and key location. Efficient keyboarding skills allow students to emphasize concept development instead of focusing on key location. Student writing develops faster through word processing because it facilitates the review and revision learning process. It has evolved from a transcription typing skill where secretaries typed handwritten letters into a generative typing skill involving composing original thought at the keyboard (Cooper, 1983). This can be a problem because only a small proportion of classroom teachers have any formal preparation for teaching keyboarding (Sormunen, 1991). While business teachers are primarily responsible for teaching keyboarding at the secondary levels, in 2005 over half of the keyboarding teachers at the elementary level were classroom teachers (Rogers, 2006). This early introduction reduces bad habit development and provides additional benefits that include improvements in spelling, writing, and reading comprehension. While the most popular grade levels are 3rd and 4th grade, recent years have seen successful introduction into even kindergarten classes. Typically taught at the middle school and high school levels, Rogers’ study (2006) of Wisconsin schools showed that 85% of their schools introduce keyboarding at the elementary level. Appropriate placement of keyboarding instruction in the elementary curriculum and reinforcement throughout their school years can provide the necessary foundation for the rest of our students’ lives. Even during preschool years, children use computers and must be guided towards efficient keyboarding habits. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Computers-in-Education from the University of Oregon. So when people wish that Thundercats Roar looked more like the 2011 reboot, it doesn’t make a difference. People didn’t tune in to watch the 2011 reboot, so it was cancelled for low viewership. Fact of the matter is, if people actually watched the 2011 reboot as it aired, then we wouldn’t be in this position. Another reason people have decried Roar is that visually, it’s a massive downgrade from the 2011 series and that its anime-inspired visuals were infinitely superior to the goofy and loose animation of Roar. It’s more appropriate to compare it to Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, a hyperactive and often annoying kids show about a group of different creatures living together that I watched all the time growing up.Īnd speaking of the 2011 reboot, let’s talk about that just for a quick minute. Not only that, but it isn’t great to compare Teen Titans Go! to Teen Titans really since they’re both completely different shows in terms of themes and intents. And yes, because I just need to remind everyone of this, these shows are aimed at CHILDREN, not adults. I wouldn’t call it good, but it has enough stupidity to make it enjoyable for young kids and has a few clever moments in it. It was more focused on showing off the fun villains and using them to explore each of the core Titans and develop them into true heroes.īut, and I can’t believe I’m doing this, Teen Titans Go! isn’t as horrible as people have made it out to be. Teen Titans Go! is clearly aiming for a younger demographic and is focused on being a comedy, while the original series has a bunch of comedic episodes, but comedy wasn’t the focus of the original series. Comparing Teen Titans to Teen Titans Go! is hardly fair, seeing as how one show I grew up with and one show I saw only a single season of, but the quality between the two series is shocking. So in a complete stroke of luck, I’ve actually been rewatching all of the 2003 Teen Titans when this whole scandal broke out. Does any of that matter for the overall quality of a show? Absolutely not. Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy all were big hits on Cartoon Network, but they had different visual designs to them. Did cartoons on Cartoon Network a decade ago all sport different visual designs to separate themselves from each other? Again, yeah, they did. They share a lot of visual similarities and it’s hard to deny that. All you need to do is look at this picture just to get what people are talking about with the CalArts style.ĭo cartoons nowadays look very similar to each other? Yes they do. Most of the biggest cartoons sport the same character designs, facial animation, and are generally indistinguishable between one another. Essentially, people are saying that a majority of cartoons nowadays looks like cookie cutter copies of each other because one of the biggest animation colleges in America, CalArts, teaches future animators one method of creating cartoons, then funnels them off to studios to homogenize the American animation industry into one singular style of animation. A bunch of animators and fans online have decried Thundercats Roar not just because it’s a revival of Thundercats, but because it has an animation style referred to as the CalArts Style. They both are trying to appeal to the same demographics, but one is clearly not as destructive as the other.įirst thing’s first, we should probably address the elephant in the room. A movie like The Secret Life of Pets may be a silly kids movie, but it at least is not as toxic to a child’s development as The Emoji Movieis. The difference is how those products are marketed and whether or not they’re even good for kids. Not every show has to be a super serious show that challenges both adults and kids, just as not every show has to be a dumb comedy that kids can laugh and reference with other kids. There can be a balance between the styles of kids’ shows. I always advocate for animation and stories that challenge and teach kids valuable lessons as well as entertain them with goofy and dumb fun. I’ve always been a big proponent of animation of what kind of shows/movies kids watch. Cartoon Network has pretty much gotten under the skin of anyone that had access to a keyboard that grew up watching the channel in the late ’90s and early 2000s. People have insulted the show for pissing on the legacy of the original series, how much worse modern kids shows are compared to the ones we grew up on, and how American animation has become nothing but garbage. For the past couple of days, my newsfeed on Facebook has been ablaze with people talking about the new Thundercats TV show, Thundercats Roar, and none of it has been positive.
